Introduction

Britain's games industry grew out of the home computers of the 1980s, when small teams and individuals wrote games for machines like the ZX Spectrum. That independent spirit still shapes a scene that ranges from global racing franchises to tiny, idiosyncratic studios.

Today the UK is home to studios working at every scale. Playground Games in Leamington Spa has made the Forza Horizon series one of the most approachable racing games around, while Sports Interactive in London has spent three decades refining Football Manager.

The country also has a strong tradition of game education, with university courses and regional clusters in places such as Dundee, Guildford, Leamington Spa, Brighton and Manchester.
